I started an LLC, now my county says I can't get a business license because of where I live? What can I do?
I filed for an LLC in Virginia, and I went to my county government office to get a business license and register a fictious name (DBA) and they said I couldn't get a business license because my property is zoned agricultural. My business consists of taking mowers and equipment I already own (or am being lended in many cases) to other people's property and doing work, it's a lawn and landscaping endeavor. Also, they say because the property does not have any public road frontage, I can't apply for a special use permit. This is where I live and where I keep the equipment, there must be some feasible way I can do a legitimate business. I can't afford commercial space, I don't suppose I can use a P.O. Box, how can I get a business license?
You should review the VA state website for small businesses maybe the county website has info too.
You could talk to an owner of a similar business in your area.
Contact the Small Business Association for your area or Chamber of Commerce to find out what is really needed.
It sounds like the gov't office person may be too extreme or not know what you were trying to do.
Some people have businesses in and from their homes. Why would this be different?
good luck,
