Battery in my 17hp craftsman lawn mower?
My mowers battery seems like it is dying. I dont have a multi meter to check the connection. Is there any other way to check the battery on my mower? I have jumper cables, and a 12 volt battery in my garage. Would that be any use? Can I jump it off the starter? Need advice..thanks
If your battery is not holding a charge, then there are three possible problems. One, the battery is bad , and needs replaced. Two, there is a short causing a voltage leak which is draining your battery. Three, your charging system is not working properly.
Multi meters can be found for around $20, and make a good investment. With the motor running and the multi meter set on DC volts, you measure across the terminals of the battery and it should be no more than 15.5 volts, and no less than 13. If it falls outside this range then you have a problem with the charging circuit and it need taken to a servicing dealer.
If you have to start your mower using your car, DO NOT IN ANY WAY HAVE THE MOTOR RUNNING!!!!! Your car charging system is 10 times more powerful, and will overload and damage the battery, and the charging system of the mower.
