Lawn mower cable problems?
My push mower is a hand-me-down, so it doesn't have the manual. I don't know the term for the cable I'm having trouble with.
The cable I'm talking about extends from handle that you hold down when you start it connecting it with the engine. When the handle is down, a metal wire is pulled out of the cable. This cable used to go back in when you let the handle up. Now the wire stays in the same position, and I have to try to push it back in by hand.
I've also had problems with the mower missing/skipping then dying. I don't know if that's related to the cable wire.
I've tried WD-40 on the wire, but that didn't help. Does anyone have suggestions? Or know what the cable is called, so I can find the part?
RE: site23's answer: I will check those things to see if it stops the skipping and dying.
I found this link about carb. cleaning and other poss. sources of the skipping. http://www.lawnmowerman.tv/Troubleshooting.asp
the cable you are talking about is the brake cable. its hooked to the handle goes down to the side of the engine to a bracket with a spring.when you pull the handle it releases a fiber brake puck that rests on the inside of the flywheel to be able to turn the engine over. when you release the handle the brake puck locks against the flywheel.not related to the missing or skipping.that could be dirt in the carburetor dirty or plugged air cleaner bad gas water in gas fouled spark plug
