How do you drive manual transmission lawn mowers? (5 speed)?
We're buying a lawn mower tractor and i found a great deal on a one tractor with a manual transmission. I know how to drive a manual car and motorcycle, but for a lawn mower that does not go fast?.. how does the manual work? Is it the traditional clutch and shifting? And why do you even need to shift gears if the machine goes so slow? The machine is a 5 speed.
You just select the gear/speed that you want then drive. There is no need to start in first and shift up.
There are usually a clutch/brake combination pedal, so a partial press of the pedal will disengage the transmission, then more pressure will begin to apply the brake. You can partially depress the pedal during a shift (required on the older units), but on any of the newer ones I've used, you could shift on the fly. Of course the older units required you to pass through the neutral position to select a different gear. The new ones, all I've seen are in sequential order, so a continuous movement forward/reward would put you in the next higher/lower gear.
