Which is the right mower to buy.?
We just bought a house and has a huge lawn in front of the house that is about 1700sq feet and a huge back yard also.
We need to buy a mower but know nothing about it.
So we need help.
Is it better to buy a gas mower or a electric one? Also, is it better to be a push mower or self propelled?
The mower needs to be easy to maintain and operate since if anything goes wrong, we would have no idea how to fix it.
I suggest that you go to your local store that sells AND SERVICES lawn mowers -- the kind of store that only sells lawn mowers, snow throwers, tillers, etc.! They will have suggestions for the right size and type of mower for your property, teach you how to use it, and will be available to provide service if necessary. My local shop does pick up and delivery, has fair prices, and makes a huge effort to make sure you have the right mower. They even have a winter time special service in which they will pick up your mower, sharpen it, tune it, clean it, replace anything that needs replacing, and re-deliver it to you. They charge a flat price that includes everything but replacement parts, keep my mower in top shape, and keep their employees busy year round, which helps everybody. My yard is modest in size, and I have a modern version of the old-fashioned reel mower "just in case", and sharpen it myself. My power mower is a wonderful gas-powered mower, very easy to start with the pull cord but also has key-start via battery, is self-propelled with 6 speeds, mulches, has large wheels in the front that turn, and has a 6 hp engine. My neighborhood is almost completely shaded, so in the fall the leaves are staggering, but my mower grinds them into mulch which I can leave on the lawn or, better yet, catch in a bag to spread on the flower beds -- clean lawn, free mulch, healthy flower beds and vegetable garden and herb garden, and no need to bag leaves and have them hauled away. You might be able to get a mower at a rock-bottom price from a "big box" store, but many of them do not hold up well, do not have the bells and whistles you will really want, and you can't get service when you need it.
