Murray Riding Lawnmower loses blade rpm's when i get into tall grass?

I have a Murray 46" 18.5 HP riding mower. When i crank the mower up and engage the blade the belt or blades don't spin, i usually have to take my hand and push the pulley and then it catches. once in catches the blade rpm's picks up. but when i hit high or think grass you can hear the rpm's drop. Im assuming this is because of a lack of tension on the belt. It is the correct belt and it is routed correctly. any suggestions please

Its normal for the rpm's to drop off when you hit high or thick turf. You just need to slow down a little when doing so. However, based on your description, it sounds as if the belt is a little stretched out and needs to be replaced. It doesn't take much to stretch the belt out and if this is the case, there is not enough tension to keep the blades engaged. It could be the PTO clutch adjustment too. But I would checkout the belt status if it was me...
