MTD riding mower cranks but doesn't kick over?
Engine: Briggs & Stratton 17HP / Model: 42A707 / Type:2238E1
MTD Model: 13AK608G062
While mowing the lawn the other week my mower just died for no reason. I couldn't get it to restart. It either clicked or just did nothing when turning the key.
Since then however I replaced the battery and spark plugs. Now the motor cranks and cranks but doesn't kick over. Actually, every now and then it will kick over for about 5 seconds and then die. The first time it did this it blew out white smoke.
I checked the fuel line and filter and made sure there were no clogs.
It could use a new air filter, but do you think an old air filter is really the problem?
Some people suggest looking for a 'needle' beneath the carb to make sure it's not stuck. I couldn't find anything like this.
Any help would be great!

Try taking the air filter out and try stating it. Also it sounds that you are flooding the carberatoer so try starting with the choke only slightly opened and closing it when the engine starts. The mower may also have a kill switch under the seat that kills the engine when you gey off and the problem may be there. Good luck.
