how do I reset the valves on my troy built riding mower?
My mower tried to turn over and then nothing, now it won't even crank. Its not the battery and an expert at wal mart told me I needed to reset the valves is like it is just dead. Anybody with information on this?
WELL, the old timer is only kinda right.
There are no experts at wal-mart.
There are a number of issues to consider.
First, check the obvious..Load test your battery. Second, look under the seat for a seat switch.......there are 2 primary safety switches in tractors. One is under your seat, and the other is generally on the brake pedal. Either one could have a wire that just simply fell off. check them both.
To check the integrity of the switches remove the 2 wires from the switch and complete the circuit by putting them together..
You might also have a bad key switch, and unfortunately they cannot be tested. But they are under 20 bucks. look behind the key switch and grab the wiring harness and shake it back and forth as to ensure that it is in fact attached. If you can see in that area easily, look for corrosion at the module and also on the are where it plugs in behind the switch. it could be a contact issue at this point.
Getting back to your battery. Check to ensure you have clean cables and that there is no evidence of battery acid backing into the cables. I have seen corroded cables that will not allow power to travel thorough the wires.
Starter solonoid is a possibility, but it is a part that cant be tested in general.
Why do you think your battery is not the issue? Because you have lights? NOT good enough.........
Start with the battery.......then check cables and connections and check for corrosion................
after that, check the fuse(s) should be one or two under the hood behind the dash panel.
if still not working do what I suggested at the key switch.
still not working.......replace key switch........just unplug and take old one to a L and G dealer....the are common parts that most should have on the shelf.
If that doesn't work then, replace the starter solonoid.......
Electrical problems on these small units can sometimes be the most frustrating but approach it logically and start with the obvious and move to the next most obvious........
GENERALLY>>>>>>>>>>>>dead batter, or safety switch issue, or key switch...........
If you are in northern vermont I can come fix it for you.......
